Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligand.
(±)2-Acetyl-Anatoxin is an alkaloidal toxin produced by the filamentous freshwater cyanophyte Anabaena flos-aquae. This compound is the synthetic version.
(±)-Anatoxin is a potent agonist at neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. At low concentrations (20 to 200 nM) it acts as an agonist. At higher concentrations (>800 nM), it blocks the AChR ion channel, desensitises the receptor and blocks neuromuscular transmission.
Soluble in water (14 mg/ml).
